In India, National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on July 1 as a mark of respect for renowned medical practitioner, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Not only was he a physician, but also a freedom fighter and an educationist. To recognize his selfless service and dedication, July 1 is celebrated as National Doctor’s Day, his birth and death anniversary. Dr. Bidhan also served as a Chief Minister of Bengal for 14 years. Born in the year 1882, in Patna, he graduated from the University of Calcutta. Following this, he went to England to continue studying medicine. After post-graduation, he became a Member of Royal College of Physicians in 1911. Later, he went on to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Dr. Bidhan was honored with a Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1961. Referred to as the first medical consultant by the British Medical Journal, Dr. Bidhan’s contributions have set a benchmark in the medical community. [3,4]
