ECG to MRI: 10 heart test types to keep in mind

There are many heart test types designed to determine a variety of issues

An ECG test is one of the most common tests done to diagnose a heart attack

Simple lifestyle changes can help manage the health of your heart

Heart disease is an umbrella term that includes a number of cardiovascular issues such as arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease and other heart infections. It is vital to remember that cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in India. Those with a family history of heart disease, high BP, cholesterol and diabetes are all at risk of serious heart problems. It is smart to know if you’re at risk so you can take the right steps going forward. This is where a heart test is crucial.

When should you get a heart test?

If you notice any of the symptoms below, consult your doctor or cardiologist, who will prescribe a heart test for further diagnosis.  

  • Chest pain, tightness, discomfort or fluttering  
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Fainting spells or dizziness 
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat or slow heartbeat 
  • Reduced ability to exercise

10 common heart tests to know about                          

1. Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)

To rule out a heart attack and to monitor the heart’s normal rhythm.  

2. Ambulatory rhythm monitoring tests

To detect abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias). 

3. Echocardiogram

To check the heart’s valves or to pinpoint the reason behind a heart murmur 

4. Coronary angiogram

To locate blockages or narrowing within the arteries. 

5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

To evaluate the functioning and anatomy of your heart to rule out heart failure and other problems. 

6. CT Scan

To determine the presence of blockages in the heart, and the overall structure of your heart. 

7. Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

To assess if the heart is producing blood clots, and check for valve disease or congenital heart defects. 

8. Exercise stress test

To understand reasons behind shortness of breath, chest pains, or changes in rhythm of the heart.

9. Pharmacologic stress test

To pinpoint blockages in the arteries, evaluate the chances of a heart attack, and understand reasons behind shortness of breath and chest pain. 

10. Tilt test

To determine the cause of fainting spells or syncope, and notice any changes in the heart rhythm.
