What is the best food for thyroid? A guide to thyroid diet

To treat thyroid disorders, doctors prescribe medication that restores the balance of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. However, you can supplement these efforts with the right diet. 

Best food for thyroid 

  • Eggs

Eggs are one of the best food for thyroid, as they are rich in both iodine and selenium.  

  • Yogurt

Apart from keeping you cool and providing your body with healthy fats, yogurt gives your body the iodine it needs.  

  • Seaweed

This is a must-add to any thyroid diet as it is rich in iodine but limit its intake as consuming too much iodine is not recommended. 

  • Shellfish

Shrimp, prawns, oysters, crab and lobster are excellent for hypothyroidism. You can also eat other seafood such as cod, salmon, tuna or seabass. Add chicken to your diet, preferably the dark meat, which contains more zinc.

Food to avoid if imbalanced thyroid  

This list includes soy, as it contains phytoestrogen, which can cause your oestrogen levels to shoot up and hamper thyroid hormone production. Cruciferous vegetables, such as kale, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower can also be harmful in large quantities as they can prevent the thyroid gland from getting the iodine it needs.

 Vegetarian thyroid diet plan

Breakfast  A bowl of fruits, porridge, oats or brown rice idlis with sambhar, banana milkshake (with oats and almonds), poha with peanuts, or sprouts and roasted sweet potatoes 

 

Lunch and dinner  Moong dal, moth beans, rajma, bottle gourd sabzipaneer bhurji, carrot sabzimethi sabzi, parwal sabzi, mixed grilled vegetables, palak paneermatar paneer or black chana sabzi with buckwheat rotis, bajra rotis, bowl of curd/raita, salad and brown rice or bowl of pumpkin, carrot or beetroot soup 
Snacks:  Handful of walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts or brazil nuts, bowl of makhana, carrot and cucumber sticks with a yogurt dip, fruits, sweet potato salad or plain yogurt with honey or fruits 
Drinks  Buttermilk, bottle gourd juice, coriander seed water, wheatgrass juice, green tea, skimmed milk, or green juice 
Non-vegetarian options  Incorporate shrimp, grilled chicken/fish and eggs
