Dr. P.L. Rao founded the Modern Eye Hospital & Research Centre (MEH&RC) in Nellore in 1993. Dr.P. Vijayalakshmi, professor and head of the department of pediatric ophthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, officially opened the hospital. Dr. Rao claims that his team has attained the highest success rates in cataract, squint, retina, refractive, and glaucoma operations. They use the Catalys Precision Laser System (Abbott). Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery is a reproducible, noninvasive technique that can replace the least predictable and technically challenging steps of traditional cataract treatments. The hospital has branches in Nellore, Chittoor, Kurnool, Ongole, Guntur and Vijaywada.
