This test measures the thyroxine hormone in the blood. Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid gland, and plays a vital role in metabolism and growth. T4 circulates in the blood in two forms, free and bound form (bound with other proteins). Excessive amounts of T4 in the blood result in symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism like weight loss and increased heart rate. Insufficient amounts of T4 leads to hypothyroidism and causes weight gain and dry skin.
