As per a survey, people on average spend 1,700 hours staring at screens per year, and this data is pre-pandemic. With work-from-home becoming the new normal, there is no doubt that the number of hours spent in front of a screen has risen significantly. Apart from laptops, you may spend a considerable amount of time in front of smaller screens such as mobile phones and tablets. While this is harmful to overall health, it can cause significant damage to the eyes. Dry eye syndrome and myopia are some examples of the resulting ailments.

The primary cause of these conditions is the reduction in eye movement and blink rate. When you communicate in person, your eyes move freely, and you blink often. This ensures that your eyes retain moisture and keep healthy. However, when you sit in front of a screen, you do not blink often. This prevents moisture retention, causing eye ailments such as weakened eyesight.

As your eyes dry out, your reading speed decreases. This increases the time you spend in front of a screen. This can cause inflammation of the eye surface, resulting in:

  • Chronic dry eye syndrome
  • Blurriness in vision
  • Irritation in the eyes
  • Weakened eyesight
  • Headaches

While personal computing and entertainment devices are here to stay, you need to take special care of your eyesight. Lifestyle changes, such as a nutritious diet and exercise, go a long way in improving and maintaining eye health.

Potential benefits of yoga for eyes

Yoga for glaucoma

Glaucoma weakens and damages your optic nerve, causing blindness if left untreated. As per experts, yoga eye exercises can reduce interocular pressure, thus healing glaucoma. This benefit has been proposed with scientific evidence; however, no clinical trials have been conducted to verify it.

Yoga after cataract surgery

Yoga help rebuilt ocular strength after cataract surgery. However, do not try this immediately after the surgery. Instead, consult your ophthalmologist to know the best time to start yoga practise.

Yoga to improve eyesight

While it is believed that yoga can reduce eyesight problems such as near-sightedness, scientific study is inconclusive. However, yoga for eyes may be done as a complementary treatment for improving eyesight.

Yoga for dark circles

Yoga relieves stress and is believed to increase blood flow, resulting in the lightening of dark circles. However, there is no scientific proof directly linking yoga eye exercises to remove dark circles

Yoga to alleviate eye strain

The primary cause of eye strain is stress. Practising yoga eye exercises not only eases stress, but also helps strengthen ocular muscles. These two factors can help in relieving eye strain. A study, for instance, found out that practising yoga for eight weeks reduced eye strain in 60 nursing students.
